Best Days to Perform Pitru Paksha Shradh
Pitru Paksha, that is, 16 days of the waning moon, are considered most auspicious to perform Shradh.
- Tithi Shradh: One should perform Shradh on the very lunar day (tithi) whenever the ancestor died.
- Mahalaya Amavasya: The most powerful day for collective Shradh when exact tithi is unknown.
Who Can Perform Pitru Paksha Shradh?
- The eldest son is normally expected to perform the Shradh rites.
- It can also be performed by any male family member, such as a brother, grandson, or nephew, if there is no eldest son.
- Women can also do Shradh if there is no male member available.
- Devotees can also perform it to seek ancestral blessings or for Pitru Dosha relief.
Pitru Paksha Shradh: Step-by-Step Procedure
- Purification & Setup Clean the home, take a bath, and prepare a peaceful space for Pitru Paksha Shradh. To start the Shradh ritual, place your ancestors’ photo or peeth facing east or north.
- Sankalpa (Intention Setting) Sit comfortably, holding water in your right hand, and make a Shradh Sankalpa with devotion. Take the ancestors' names and state the intention of doing Pitru Shradh.
- Offering Deepam & Naivedya Start the Pitru Paksha puja by lighting a ghee lamp and incense. Offer rice, fruits, sweets, along with traditional naivedya specially prepared for Shradh rituals.
- Tarpan - Water Offering Mix black sesame seeds with water and perform Pitru Tarpan respectfully. Slowly offer water, accompanied by mantras or ancestor names, as part of the Shradh Vidhi.
- Pinda Daan (Offering Rice Balls) Prepare pindas with rice, ghee, and sesame seeds for Pinda Daan. Put them on a banana leaf and pray for peace and moksha of the departed souls during Pitru Paksha.
- Feeding Brahmins & Final Prayers Offer food to Brahmins or distribute meals to the poor, an important ritual performed during Pitru Paksha Shradh. Conclude the ritual by offering prayer and blessings for family harmony in accordance with the Shradh procedures.
