Why is The Birth of Krishna Known as Krishna Janmashtami?

The term ‘Janam’ means birth, and ‘Ashta’ in Sanskrit is eight. The number eight is significant, as Shri Krishna was the 8th avatar, also known as an incarnation, of Lord Vishnu. Shri Krishna was the 8th child born to Devaki Maa, and he was also born on the 8th day of the Krishna Paksha in the Holy month of Shravan.

Many centuries ago, in the city of Mathura, there ruled a tyrant king named Kansa. A prophecy was foretold that the eighth son of his sister Devaki would be the cause of his death. Fearing for his life, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva and cruelly killed their first six children. On a dark night, in the middle of thunderstorms, Lord Krishna was born as Devaki’s eighth child inside the prison. At that very moment, the prison doors miraculously opened, the guards fell into deep sleep, and the shackles binding Vasudeva were released. Following divine guidance, Vasudeva carried the newborn Krishna across the flooded Yamuna River to Gokul. The river parted to make way, and Adi Shesha sheltered the child from the rain. In Gokul, Vasudeva exchanged Krishna with baby Yogmaya, the daughter of Nanda and Yashoda. When Kansa tried to kill the infant, Yogmaya slipped from his hands, rose to the sky, and warned him that his destroyer was already safe elsewhere. Lord Krishna grew up in Gokul, blessing the world with his divine leelas, protecting devotees, and later fulfilling his destiny by destroying Kansa and guiding humanity through the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita.
